Scientific surveys of the Norwegian spring-spawning herring stock have started, with research vessels from several North Atlantic countries now at sea.
The Icelandic research vessel Þórunn Þórðardóttir departed on 27 April and will operate until 15 May. The mission is to measure the size of the stock and assess the marine ecosystem east and north-east of Iceland.
International survey effort at sea
The survey is part of an annual international programme. Vessels from the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, Denmark and Norway are also taking part.
The work follows fixed survey lines across the North Atlantic. Scientists collect data on fish distribution, biomass and feeding conditions.
30 years of coordinated monitoring
The joint survey has run every year since 1996. This year marks its 30th anniversary.
The long time series is used to track changes in the stock and support fisheries advice.
Results due later this summer
Findings from the survey will be compiled in a joint report. The report will be submitted to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) later this summer.
The results will feed into future quota advice and management decisions for the shared stock.
