Faroese mackerel export value rose by almost EUR 106 million over the past year, driven by higher prices and larger volumes, according to new figures from the national statistic office Hagstova Føroya.

The value of exported mackerel increased by 791 million Faroese kroner in the 12 months from December 2024 to November 2025. That equals just under EUR 106 million. This is a 65.6 per cent year-on-year rise.

Export volumes also grew. Faroese mackerel exports rose by more than 15,000 tonnes, up 19.4 per cent. The average value per kilo rose by nearly 39 per cent.

Strong lift in total exports

Total goods exports from the Faroe Islands reached 13.4 billion kroner, about EUR 1.8 billion, in the period. That is EUR 124 million more than the previous 12-month period.

Fish products made up most of the increase. Fish export value rose by nearly 980 million kroner, or 8.4 per cent. Several key species showed growth, including cod, haddock, saithe and mackerel.

Prices drive mackerel gains

Mackerel was one of the strongest performers. Export value rose far faster than volumes, showing that prices played a significant role.

By contrast, salmon exports fell slightly in value, down 40 million kroner, despite an apparent rise in exported volume. This points to lower prices per kilo for salmon over the period.

EU remains key market

The most significant growth in fish exports was to the EU. Exports to the bloc rose by more than one billion kroner, around EUR 135 million.

Within the EU, exports to the Netherlands and Poland recorded the most significant increases. Exports to the UK declined, while sales to markets in Asia and the Middle East increased.
