More than 11,900 tonnes of blue whiting and greater silver smelt were landed in the Faroe Islands during week 19, as Faroese pelagic factories continued to handle large volumes of fish.

The largest landings occurred in Fuglafjørður and Tvøroyri. Havsbrún, Pelagos and Varðin Pelagic all received catches from Faroese and foreign vessels.

Fuglafjørður handled the largest catches

Fagraberg landed 2,700 tonnes of blue whiting at Havsbrún after fishing south and west of the Faroe Islands. Greenlandic vessel Polar Ammassak also delivered 2,000 tonnes of blue whiting to the factory.

Later in the week, Birita landed 1,800 tonnes of blue whiting in Fuglafjørður. Norðingur delivered 1,170 tonnes to Pelagos, while Arctic Voyager arrived with 1,250 tonnes. Most vessels had been fishing west of the Faroes.

Heavy activity in Tvøroyri

Tróndur í Gøtu landed 1,260 tonnes of blue whiting at Varðin Pelagic in Tvøroyri, where the fish was frozen whole.

Gøtunes also arrived with 1,600 tonnes of blue whiting and was due to unload after Tróndur í Gøtu finished landing.

Tummas T. delivered 140 tonnes of greater silver smelt to the same factory.

Blue whiting remains key for the pelagic sector

The landings underline the continued importance of the blue whiting fishery for the Faroese pelagic industry. Both Faroese and foreign vessels supplied local factories during the week.
