The Faroe Islands currently have the highest publicly visible first-hand capelin price among six North Atlantic markets reviewed in a new comparison by Fish Break. The Faroese reference price for capelin destined for freezing is 13.00 DKK per kilo, equivalent to EUR 1.74/kg.

The comparison by Fish Break also shows that the Icelandic freezing price is far lower at 80.64 ISK/kg, equivalent to 4.19 DKK or EUR 0.56/kg.

In Norway, the only publicly visible reference prices are minimum first-hand prices for fishmeal and fish oil production. Those prices stand at 2.7420 NOK/kg and 2.3310 NOK/kg, equal to 1.89 DKK (EUR 0.25) and 1.60 DKK (EUR 0.21) respectively.

Different markets and products

It should be said that the figures are not directly comparable. The Faroese and Icelandic prices cover capelin for freezing and human consumption. In contrast, the Norwegian prices cover industrial reduction fish for meal and oil production.

Based on publicly available data, the Faroese freezing price is about 3.1 times higher than the Icelandic freezing price and nearly 6.9 times higher than the Norwegian minimum price for reduction use.

The comparison highlights major differences in product channels, pricing systems and public transparency across the six markets. It concludes that the Faroese market currently offers the highest publicly available first-hand capelin price among comparable sources.
