Greenland’s seafood exports grew in value during the first eight months of 2025, even as shrimp – the country’s single most important product – saw a steep decline.

According to Statistics Greenland, total exports of key species, including shrimp, cod, halibut, crab, and lumpfish roe, reached 3.26 billion DKK, an increase of 5.8% or 179 million DKK compared with the same period last year.

Cod leads the growth

Cod was the clear winner. Export value increased by 74.1%, driven by a 47.7% rise in volume and a nearly 18% rise in prices. In August alone, cod exports doubled compared with last year.

Halibut also performed strongly, with its export value rising 14.2% due to higher catch volumes, although average prices fell slightly.

Shrimp struggles

In sharp contrast, shrimp exports slumped. The value declined by nearly 20%, resulting in a loss of approximately 325 million DKK. Both volumes and prices dropped, underlining the pressure on one of Greenland’s cornerstone fisheries.

Crab exports also fell by almost 19%, mainly because of a sharp drop in catch volumes, though higher prices offset some of the loss.
