The first lobsters of the 2025 season were sold this week at Göteborg’s fish auction for SEK 51,000 (€4,335) per Kilo – precisely the same record price reached last year.

Historic win for Feskekörka

The two lobsters, caught in the Skagerrak and weighing a total of 1.2 kilograms, went to the famous fish hall, Feskekörka. The winning bid was placed by Fish Hall manager Tove Manning, who, according to onlookers, became the first woman ever to secure the prestigious opening lot.

“It feels fantastic! I’m here every morning to buy fish, but today was something special. Usually, it’s just me and all the men,” Fish Hall manager Tove Manning said after the hammer fell.

Gender mix-up at the auction

There was a brief moment of confusion after the sale. Auction officials first described the pair as one male and one female lobster.

Manning, however, insisted they were both males – and after closer inspection, she was proven right.

“I must have been too quick with my judgment,” admitted auction CEO Roger Thilander.

Despite the identical price to 2024, Thilander said the outcome was above average compared with earlier years. In 2012, the highest ever price was set, when the season’s first lobster reached SEK 102,000 (€8,670) per Kilo.

Money goes to sea rescue

As tradition dictates, most of the auction proceeds will be donated to the Swedish Sea Rescue Society.

“These gifts are vital for us. We are fully dependent on donations, so we are very grateful,” said spokesperson and volunteer rescuer Cecilia Jönsson.

The prized lobsters are expected to be cooked and served at Feskekörka in the coming days – though not at the SEK 51,000 (€4,335) price tag paid this morning.
