Two Icelandic line vessels, Páll Jónsson GK and Sighvatur GK, have reported good fishing east of the country in recent days. Both boats landed sizeable catches of cod at Neskaupstaður and Djúpivogur, despite changeable autumn weather.

Strong results from Páll Jónsson

Skipper Jónas Ingi Sigurðsson said Páll Jónsson first hauled three lines in Héraðsflói, landing 82 tonnes. After a brief return to port due to bad weather, the vessel returned to the same grounds, adding 46 tonnes in two more hauls.

In total, the trip brought in 128 tonnes from five sets. “The bulk of the catch is cod. We sailed again right after landing on Friday,” Jónas noted.

Good trip for Sighvatur

Aðalsteinn Rúnar Friðþjófsson, skipper of Sighvatur, reported a catch of 105 tonnes, also mostly cod. “We landed at Djúpivogur and went straight back to sea.

The fish are both large and in satisfactory condition, averaging four kilos,” he said. Fishing took place in Héraðsflói and near Bjarnarey, where herring was also present. “It was a fine trip. The first two days were calm, then autumn weather set in, but no one can complain.”

The results underline the strong start to the season for East Iceland’s line fleet, with solid cod landings despite shifting weather.
