The DanFish International 2025 exhibition has renewed confidence in the future of Danish fisheries, says Svend-Erik Andersen, chairman of the Danish Fishers PO (Danmarks Fiskeriforening).

Held in Aalborg, the major European fair attracted visitors and exhibitors from across the continent, all eager to explore the latest fishing technology and sustainable solutions.

Greener Fishing Technology

Among this year’s highlights were hybrid engines and new trawl door designs aimed at cutting emissions and seabed impact.

“It’s inspiring to see how fast innovation is moving,” Andersen said. “These technologies will play a major role in shaping tomorrow’s fishing fleet.”

Sound Instead of Electricity

A standout innovation came from Sonus Fishery, which showcased a sound-based method to lift fish from the seabed. Working with DTU Aqua, the company hopes the system can replace electric pulse fishing and reduce bottom contact.

“It sounds almost too good to be true,” Andersen said, “but it could be a real step forward.”

Push for Simpler Rules

DanFish 2025 also became a platform for fisheries policy discussions. The Danish Fishermen’s Association launched *“Fisheries Policy with Purpose, calling for more straightforward rules in exchange for complete digital documentation. The proposal includes more flexible gear choices and fewer administrative burdens.

Despite challenges facing the sector, Andersen said the fair showed that Danish fisheries remain strong, adaptable, and full of ideas for the future.
