The value of fish landed for Denmark’s fishmeal and fish oil industry reached DKK 1.46 billion (€195.7 million) in 2025, up 20% from 2024, despite almost unchanged volumes.
Landings rose only 1.9% to 492,299 tonnes. The increase was driven by higher prices, not more fish. The average settlement price rose from DKK 2.53/kg to DKK 2.97/kg (€0.40/kg) — a 17.8% increase.
Prices, not supply, drove the market
The sector faced sharply higher raw material costs as processors paid more for roughly the same quantities.
The industry warned that price growth without matching volume growth weakens competitiveness against producers in lower-cost countries.
Sprat and sandeel led the increase
Sprat recorded strong gains in both value (+31.7%) and volume (+22.5%).
Sandeel’s value rose 29.6% despite a 5.8% decline in volume.
Central buyer of Danish catches
The fishmeal sector accounts for approximately DKK 1 billion (€134.0 million) of the total landing value of Danish vessels.
The raw material is processed into marine ingredients used in global aquaculture and food production.
