A new Scottish pelagic data collection programme has been formalised after government, industry, and scientists signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a data-sharing agreement that runs to 2030.
The agreement links the Scottish Government Marine Directorate, the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association (SPFA) and UHI Shetland under the Scottish Pelagic Industry Science Data Collection Programme (SPISDCP).
The project will collect commercial catch data to support stock assessments and research, improving the understanding of pelagic fisheries.
Long-term science cooperation
The MoU sets a framework for joint design, planning, implementation and reporting of the programme, including scientific publications.
SPFA Chief Scientific Officer Dr Steven Mackinson said the deal formalises commitments and lays the groundwork for future collaboration.
Data for management decisions
Matthew Gubbins of the Marine Directorate said the agreement ensures a reliable long-term supply of high-quality industry data to support sustainable fisheries management.
He added that it strengthens evidence-based decision-making through partnership with the fishing industry.
Industry-science partnership
UHI Shetland scientist Dr Katie Brigden said the programme shows the contribution industry can make to science and strengthens collaborative work going forward.
The agreement will be reviewed at the end of 2030.
