On July 1st, EU Commissioner Costas Kadis hosted a key meeting in Brussels to discuss Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).
The MSP Directive helps guide the use of European seas, balancing economic activity with the protection of marine life.
As more sectors compete for ocean space, thoughtful planning becomes vital. Kadis brought together industry leaders, national and regional authorities, and environmental groups. They shared views on how the directive is working and what changes may be needed.
This dialogue is closely linked to the European Ocean Pact. The goal is to update the MSP Directive and possibly introduce a new Ocean Act — a broad framework to support sustainable sea use across the EU.
A push to improve laws
Commissioner Kadis said, “By bringing voices from across the maritime spectrum to the table, this dialogue will help us ensure the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive evolves with the challenges — and opportunities — of our maritime space.”
This was Kadis’s first “Implementation Dialogue,” part of a wider EU push to improve how laws are implemented. The event’s outcomes will be published online soon.
The talks reflect growing urgency to manage the oceans wisely, supporting both blue economy jobs and marine ecosystems.
