The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) has called for an immediate halt to new offshore wind farm consents. They warn that the Government is risking Scotland’s seas, fishing jobs, and coastal traditions, writes The Skipper.

The Scottish Government wants up to 40GW of offshore wind by 2040. But SFF says the scale is “far too high” and could cause lasting harm to marine life while pushing fleets off grounds they’ve worked for generations.

“A stampede, not a plan”

Elspeth Macdonald, SFF’s Chief Executive, accused ministers of rushing ahead without safeguarding fishing. “This isn’t a plan – it’s a stampede,” she said. “Until they can prove our seas and industry will be protected, the brakes must be applied.”

The SFF claims ministers are shaping marine plans around leasing deals instead of proper consultation. They argue existing protections are weak, compensation is absent, and conservation rules are being bent to allow harm.

Fishing leaders say their industry, already squeezed by conservation rules and endless consultations, is at the breaking point. “Renewable food cannot be the price for renewable energy,” Macdonald warned
