Royal Greenland is heading into an extraordinary general meeting today. The move comes after years of financial losses and leadership struggles at the self-rule-owned fishing giant.
The Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut, has decided on new board members. But the decision has split the cabinet — not everyone agrees on the direction for the troubled company.
Leadership under fire
Royal Greenland has posted heavy losses for two consecutive years: 196 million kroner in 2024 and 255 million kroner the year before. Earlier this year, the board dismissed CEO Susanne Arfelt Rajamand, sparking further debate.
Her residence abroad had already been a sticking point. In both 2023 and 2024, Naalakkersuisut pushed for the top management to be based in Greenland. But the company’s board, led by Maliina Abelsen, resisted, arguing it was unrealistic. By the end of last year, three out of four executives still lived outside Greenland.
A divided government
Minutes from the cabinet show that a majority approved the new board members. But at least one minister, Naaja H. Nathanielsen, openly opposed the decision.
