The Icelandic pelagic vessel Barði NK returned to Neskaupstaður yesterday afternoon with a strong catch of 770 tonnes of herring, landing after just over a day at sea. The fish was quickly processed at Síldarvinnslan’s factory the same evening.
Skipper: “As easy as fishing gets”
Captain Theodór Haraldsson described the trip as a “dream tour”.
“It was just over 24 hours from harbour to harbour. We couldn’t start fishing straight away because of the cold winds. Still, once we got to Glettinganes, we found plenty of herring,” Captain Theodór Haraldsson explained.
The fish were large, with an average weight of 413 grams, and about 30% were Icelandic summer-spawning herring.
Quick trip back to port
The fishing grounds lay around 30 nautical miles from Neskaupstaður, making for only a two-and-a-half to three-hour return trip. “These are about the easiest fishing conditions you can imagine,” Haraldsson added.
At the processing plant, operations manager Geir Sigurpáll Hlöðversson praised the quality of the catch.
“This is beautiful herring, ideal for production. We are making flaps and also freezing whole fish. It’s excellent raw material and easy to work with,” operations manager Geir Sigurpáll Hlöðversson said.
