Fishing activity has remained high around the Faroe Islands this past seven days, with several vessels landing strong catches between 10 and 16 October.

The trawlers Heykur and Falkur brought in one of the largest hauls — 470,000 lb of saithe to Faroe Origin in Runavík after fishing east of the islands.

At Klaksvík, three smaller longliners landed a total of 2,000 lb, while at Kollafjørður, Jógvan I. landed 69 tons of mixed fish caught near the Faroes.

Strong cod and haddock catches

The trawler Vesturvarði from Sørvágur delivered 135,000 lb to Snarfrost in Miðvágur, mostly cod from the Ridge area. In Toftir, the gillnetter Oknin landed 40,000 lb — mainly black halibut — from western grounds, and Volunteer followed later in the week with 48,000 lb, half of it haddock.

On Thursday, the longliner Núpur landed around 80,000 lb of cod and haddock in Kósin. Smaller boats also reported solid results, with more than 114,000 lb sold at the Fish Market during the week.

Positive signs for autumn fishing

The steady stream of landings and good fishing reports from across the islands underline a strong autumn start for the Faroese fleet. Catches have been stable across several species, giving processors and markets a welcome boost.
