Danish engineering firm NIRAS has completed a significant project for the Danish Energy Agency (Energistyrelsen), defining how future offshore wind farms will be monitored for their environmental impact.

The new “effect monitoring programme” sets out detailed guidelines across ten environmental areas including water quality, underwater noise, seabed habitats, fish, birds, bats, and marine mammals.

Clearer rules and stricter standards

The ten “playbooks” provide a more precise foundation for developers, with some environmental factors now required to be monitored for up to 15 years after construction.

“With these manuals, Danish authorities are raising the bar for environmental care in offshore projects,” said Line Anker Kyhn, senior consultant at NIRAS and project leader. “Developers will face stricter requirements, but they will also find the rules clearer and easier to meet.”

Long-term insights into marine life

The Energy Agency’s new framework aims to strengthen understanding of how large-scale offshore wind affects life in and above the sea.

All materials have been peer-reviewed by Aarhus University’s Department of Ecoscience and consultancy WSP. The results will guide environmental assessments in upcoming Danish offshore wind projects.
