Icelandic pelagic vessel Barði NK arrived in Neskaupstaður earlier this week with 1,255 tonnes of herring after a trip that demanded patience and long searching.

Skipper Theodór Haraldsson said the crew had to work hard to find the fish. The vessel stayed far out in Kolluáll, where the herring was spread out and difficult to track. They hauled seven times, with catches ranging from 100 to 310 tonnes in each haul.

Mixed Weather at Sea

There was a steady north-east breeze during the fishing, but calm seas on the way east. Despite the challenge of locating the shoals, conditions were considered typical for this time of year. Theodór said there was no reason to complain, calling it a “quite typical trip.”

The herring landed was of good size, averaging between 290 and 320 grams. Processing the full catch was expected to take around two days. Once complete, Barði NK headed back to the same area to continue fishing.
