The hull of the new Faroese freezer trawler Dunga Jákup was launched and handed over on 10 December at the Stocznia Wisła shipyard in Gdansk, Poland.

The vessel will now begin its journey to the Faroe Islands, where MEST will complete it on Skála.

Ceremony marks key milestone

A small ceremony took place in the yard, with representatives from the owner, Varðin, and the Faroese shipyard MEST in attendance.

Photos from the event show the hull entering the water for the first time. The trip to the Faroes is expected to take around ten days, depending on weather conditions.

Final outfitting in the Faroes

Once the hull arrives in Skála, the Faroe Islands, the shipyard MEST will continue the vessel’s complete outfitting. Delivery to the owner Varðin is planned for summer 2026.

The trawler belongs to the company P/F Hvanngarður, part of the Varðin group.

Replacing an older vessel

Construction began earlier in 2025 and has progressed as planned. Dunga Jákup is 44 metres long and 12 metres wide. It is named after Jákup Jacobsen, one of Varðin’s founders, who passed away last December.

The new trawler will replace Rankin, which Varðin sold to Sandavágur, Faroe Islands, in late 2023.
