Large reconstruction work is underway on the pelagic fishing vessel Norðborg, as engineers replace the ship’s factory and freezing equipment during a major refit expected to last several months.

The Faroese Facebook page Føroyska Sjómansmissiónin (Faroese Seamen’s Mission) writes in an update that the work is underway. At the same time, the vessel is alongside in the Faroe Islands. The old processing factory and freezing installation have been removed. A completely new factory and new freezing system will now be installed.

New factory and freezing equipment

According to Føroyska Sjómansmissiónin, most of the equipment in both the factory and freezing sections will be new. The handling system for fishmeal sacks will also be moved one deck higher as part of the rebuild.

The work is being carried out by the shipyard MEST. Engineers have already begun preparatory work in the factory area. At one stage, the deck in the factory space was cleaned using water blasting at 3,000 bar pressure. This produced thick steam inside the compartment while the work was underway.

Structural changes to the vessel

Several structural upgrades will also be made to the vessel. A lift will be installed. The deck between the bridge and the aft section will be enclosed. Other improvements are also planned as part of the upgrade project.

The work is expected to take several months. According to the current plan, the refit should be completed during the summer.

Crew and visitors on board

Crew members have remained involved during the work period. Four engine room crew were recently working on board while other tasks were carried out.

During the ongoing work, representatives from the Faroese Seamen’s Mission also visited the vessel while engineers continued with various upgrades.
