Almost 8,000 tonnes of blue whiting have been landed at Neskaupstaður in just over 24 hours, marking a strong start to the Icelandic pelagic season.

The vessels Barði NK, Börkur NK and Beitir NK are delivering the catches to Síldarvinnslan’s fishmeal plant, which is now running at full capacity.

Barði NK arrived first with 1,720 tonnes. It was followed by Börkur NK with 3,250 tonnes. Beitir NK is expected with a further 2,950 tonnes.

Together, the three vessels bring total landings close to 8,000 tonnes within a short timeframe.

Fishing improves in Faroese waters

The fish was caught in the southern part of the Faroese zone, in the so-called “grey area”.

According to Barði’s skipper, fishing conditions improved during the trip. Early signs were weak, but catches increased towards the end. The vessel completed five hauls, each ranging from 200 to 450 tonnes.

Weather conditions were poor. Strong winds limited operations for periods during the trip.

Strong start for processing season

The fishmeal plant has now begun full operations. Management expects a steady flow of raw material if fishing remains strong.

Early signs from the catches are positive, and the start of the season is described as promising.
