The blue whiting season in Faroese waters has ended after a strong fishing period that delivered more than 34,000 tonnes to the Síldarvinnslan fishmeal plant in Neskaupstaður, Iceland.
Strong Blue Whiting Landings
A total of 34,252 tonnes of blue whiting arrived at the plant between 13 April and 13 May. The first cargo arrived in April, while the final delivery came from the Greenlandic vessel Polar Ammassak with 2,200 tonnes.
Fishmeal Production Runs Smoothly
Hafþór Eiríksson, operations manager at the fishmeal factory, said the season went very well. He said raw material quality was high and that a stable electricity supply meant the factory did not need to use oil for production.
The factory produced 5,400 tonnes of fishmeal during the season. It also shipped 700 tonnes of fish oil to Lýsi hf for human consumption products.
Eiríksson said fish oil yields were low because of the time of year. He added that production at the factory is unlikely to restart before late July. However, other work will continue at the site in the meantime.
