Danish fishing businessman Henning Kjeldsen has a personal fortune of 2.5 billion Danish kroner, equal to about EUR 335 million. But the 62-year-old says he has no plans to retire.

Kjeldsen is known as one of Denmark’s most powerful figures in the fishing industry. Over the years, he has faced repeated public criticism and negative headlines.

His latest project is Maskinrummet, a large motor museum and experience centre on the Skagen harbour front. The complex covers 10,000 square metres and has been under construction since 2023.

Cleared in a major court case

Kjeldsen was a central figure in Denmark’s biggest case on alleged fishing quota fraud. He and seven others were accused of cheating involving quotas worth 232 million kroner, around EUR 31 million.

He was convicted in the city court but later acquitted by the high court.

“There are both good and bad headlines. That is how it is. I don’t take it too hard,” he said.

Some residents have criticised the Maskinrummet project. Kjeldsen believes attitudes will change once it opens.

“It will be a pleasure to visit, unlike the old auction hall that was falling apart,” he said.
