The Faroese fishing company P/F Brestir of Sørvágur has bought a brand-new freezer trawler from Denmark — a vessel that has never been used for fishing.
The ship, built in 2021 at Karstensens Skibsværft in Skagen, will soon undergo modifications before beginning its new life in the Faroes.
A new vessel for the Faroese fleet
The trawler, named Vesturleiki, measures 48 metres in length and 11 metres in width, with a freezer hold capacity of around 300 tonnes of frozen fish. It is powered by a 1,370 kW Yanmar main engine and fitted with three electric trawl winches, making it a modern and energy-efficient addition to the Faroese fleet.
Although built four years ago, the vessel has never been at sea. Initially intended for North Sea operations, both its trawl deck and factory layout will now be rebuilt and adapted for the Faroese fishing industry.
Three additional cabins will also be added, and the refit is expected to take about three months before Vesturleiki heads north to her new home port.
According to sources in the Faroese fishing sector, Vesturleiki will likely arrive in the Faroe Islands early in 2026, once the Danish yard has completed the necessary modifications.
