The Faroese freezer trawler Norðborg is about to take pelagic fishing to a new level. The vessel is being fitted with one of the world’s most advanced automated processing decks — developed in close partnership between the Norwegian technology company Optimar and the Faroese shipowner P/F Hvalnes. This, according to the media outlet Blue Faroe Islands.
A fully automated system from catch to packaging
Installation is taking place at the MEST shipyard in the Faroe Islands. The new setup integrates sorting, freezing, and packing in a fully automated process that can handle up to 200 tonnes of mackerel, herring, or blue whiting per day.
Optimar’s sales director, Jon-Åge Eidem, says the system combines the company’s experience from land-based plants with onboard solutions. “This shows the progressive and ambitious mindset of Norðborg,” he adds.
Hallstein Jacobsen, technical manager at P/F Hvalnes, says the investment is about staying ahead and ensuring top quality. “Working closely with Optimar gives us proven and reliable technology tailored to our needs,” he explains.
Traceability, safety, and sustainability
The new system ensures full traceability — from catch to finished product — with advanced monitoring of temperature, species, and timing. A new horizontal freezer enhances product quality, and its ergonomic design reduces heavy lifting, improving safety for the crew.
Captain Jón Rasmussen calls it a “major step forward” for the vessel’s operations, improving both efficiency and working conditions.
Optimar first delivered equipment to Norðborg in 2009. Fifteen years later, the two partners are once again setting a new global standard for sustainable and efficient pelagic production at sea.
