Eggert Benedikt Guðmundsson has been named acting Director of Iceland’s Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (Hafrannsóknastofan). He replaces Þorsteinn Sigurðsson, who has stepped aside after requesting leave until the end of his term in March next year.

Experienced leader takes over

Eggert Benedikt, who holds an MBA from IESE Business School in Barcelona and has a background in engineering, is well-known in both business and public service.

He served as CEO of HB Grandi from 2005 to 2012, and later led the fuel and service company N1 until 2015. Earlier, he worked in business development at Philips Electronics in Belgium and the United States.

In recent years, Eggert has focused on sustainability. He was the managing director of Grænvangur, Iceland’s green industry platform. He most recently headed sustainability work within the Prime Minister’s Office.
