The average export price of whole salmon from the Faroe Islands has dropped by 15 per cent over the past year, new figures from Hagstova Føroya show. From September 2024 to August 2025, salmon export value fell by DKK 274.8 million, even as export volume rose 12.4 per cent.

The total export value of Faroese goods reached DKK 13.1 billion in the same period — about one billion more than the previous year — driven mainly by higher mackerel prices and volumes.

Salmon price hits two-year low

The average price for fresh whole salmon has fluctuated widely since early 2022, ranging between DKK 50 and 90 per kilo. In August 2024, the average was DKK 50.40 per kilo; a year later, it had dropped to DKK 40.50 — a fall of almost 20 per cent.

While the overall export of fish products increased by about seven per cent to DKK 12.15 billion, salmon was among the few categories to decline. Fishmeal, oil, and feed exports also fell sharply, together down by DKK 652 million.

Mackerel exports surge

By contrast, mackerel exports surged, rising by more than DKK 1 billion — a 127 per cent increase — mainly due to higher prices. The total volume of mackerel exported rose 63 per cent.

Exports of cod and haddock also grew strongly, while exports of blue whiting and herring saw moderate gains.

Geographically, exports to the EU and Asia rose the most, particularly to China. In contrast, exports to the United States fell by around eight per cent.
