Norwegian shipbuilder VARD is progressing with the construction of the new Havbryn, an advanced stern trawler designed for sustainable fishing and improved crew comfort. The vessel is set for delivery in the third quarter of 2026.
A next-generation design
The 80.4-metre Havbryn is based on VARD’s proven trawler design and will replace the current Havbryn, built in 2013.
Equipped for both semi-pelagic and bottom-trawling, the new vessel combines strong fuel economy with gentle fish handling. The Ice-1A-rated hull and Silent F notation ensure safe and quiet operation even in Arctic waters.

Energy-efficient and high-tech
The trawler will feature a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system supported by Vard Electro’s SeaQ Energy Storage System. Energy recovered from the electric trawl winches will be reused, cutting fuel consumption and emissions.
Additional innovations include an advanced heat-recovery setup, SeaQ Bridge digital control system, and a complete SEAONICS winch and crane package for safe deck handling in harsh conditions.
Focus on crew welfare.
Inside, Havbryn will include architect-designed living spaces with low-noise cabins, a gym, and modern recreation areas. The onboard H/G processing factory, refrigeration and ensilage systems will allow efficient resource use and better catch quality.
The hull is being built at a VARD yard in Romania, while outfitting and final delivery will take place in Norway. The vessel is commissioned by Havbryn AS, part of the Strand Rederiet group — one of Norway’s major family-owned fishing companies.
