Iceland’s Summer-Spawning Herring have been granted renewed MSC certification, valid for five years until 2030, confirming the fishery remains sustainable, well-managed and aligned with Marine Stewardship Council standards. This, according to Icelandic media outlet mbl.is

Strong Stock and Low Ecosystem Impact

The stock is considered strong and in line with ICES advice. A new harvest rule has been adopted and deemed precautionary.

The fishery is highly targeted with very low bycatch, limiting impact on ecosystems and other species.

New Condition Linked to Stock Mixing

Certification includes one new condition related to assessing the minor share of spring-spawning herring present in catches.

This does not affect gear or fishing practices, but requires continued data collection in cooperation with marine scientists.

Kristinn Hjálmarsson of Icelandic Sustainable Fisheries says the renewed certification confirms responsible, science-based management.

The certification strengthens market access, as MSC approval is often required. ISF manages accreditation for more than 60 companies.
