Scottish fishing leaders have urged Holyrood election candidates to back the industry and called for a halt to new offshore wind projects until their impacts are fully addressed.

According to an article in The Shetland Times, The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) published a new manifesto on New Year’s Day, warning that fishing faces growing pressure from regulation, loss of sea space and negative public debate.

The document underscores the importance of fishing to coastal and island communities and calls for a moratorium on offshore wind developments.

It says the sector must be protected from what it calls “spatial squeeze” and restrictive policies. It argues that any losses caused by wind projects should be fully compensated.

Call for a moratorium on offshore wind

The manifesto highlights offshore wind as a key threat. Fishing leaders say projects are moving ahead without sufficient regard for their impacts on fishing grounds and livelihoods.

They want development paused until the impacts are properly understood and resolved.

Industry warns of growing pressure

SFF chief executive Elspeth Macdonald said fishing is a modern and globally recognised industry that provides jobs and supports a wide seafood supply chain.

She said fishermen now face more complex rules, less space at sea, and what she described as constant negativity from some environmental groups.

Appeal to election candidates

Ms Macdonald urged political candidates to speak up for fishing as part of Scotland’s food sector. She said politicians should support the industry because it creates jobs, generates income, and improves food security in coastal areas.

The manifesto follows recent warnings from the Shetland Fishermen’s Association about a challenging year ahead.
