Westcon holds a christening ceremony and open ship event for the new fishing vessel Quantus in Ølensvåg today. The newbuild is a 76.4-metre pelagic trawler designed for fishing herring, mackerel and blue whiting.
The vessel was built by Westcon Yards for M.V. Quantus Limited and Peter and J. Johnstone Limited. The company describes the ship as a “next-generation” fishing vessel.
Modern pelagic fishing vessel
Quantus has a beam of 15.8 metres and will target key pelagic fish stocks in the North Atlantic. Westcon said the project fits its strategy of delivering high-quality ships to leading fishing companies.
Mark and Stuart Buchan said they were pleased with Westcon’s work during the build process. They praised the yard’s dedication, professionalism and craftsmanship.
Westcon expands beyond the offshore market
Westcon said it has invested more than NOK 500 million, or about EUR 43 million, in upgrades at its yards over the past few years. The company operates facilities in Ølen, Florø, Karmøy and Helgeland.
Endre Matre of Westcon said the company is working to grow activity outside the offshore sector. He said the delivery of Quantus shows the yard remains competitive in the international fishing vessel market.
More shipbuilding projects ahead
After delivering Quantus, Westcon will continue work on a 128-metre cable-laying vessel for DFO.
Westcon has built and converted fishing vessels since the 1960s. The company also works with offshore, energy and maritime projects, including ship repairs and rig maintenance.
