Strong catches of NVG herring continued last week, with almost 27,000 tonnes reported to Norges Sildesalgslag. Smaller volumes of mackerel were landed, and the first blue whiting catch of the year has been reported.

NVG herring fishery stays strong

A total of 26,981 tonnes of NVG herring were reported during the week. Around 60 vessels took part. Fishing mainly took place near Stjernøya, southwest of Sørøya, and outside Kvænangen. On Sunday, two Faroese vessels also reported catches from waters northwest of Sørøya, outside the 12-mile limit.

The herring ranged from about 200 grams to over 300 grams, with an average weight of 265 grams. Fishing conditions were described as good. The fleet is expected to move further offshore in the coming days, with vessels heading north from Arnøya.

Mackerel catches west of Shetland

Last week’s mackerel landings totalled 4,120 tonnes. Two Norwegian and five foreign vessels reported catches. Fishing took place west of Shetland.

The mackerel varied in size, with average weights ranging from 375 to 460 grams. The overall average weight was 430 grams. More catches are expected in the coming week.

First blue whiting of the year

The Swedish vessel Astrid reported 3,150 tonnes of blue whiting on Friday. This was the first blue whiting catch of the year. The fish was taken in the UK zone.

In addition, 18 tonnes of horse mackerel were reported from three vessels operating off Rogaland. The fish averaged 400-500 grams.
