The new 75-metre pelagic trawler and purse seine Knester has arrived in its home port of Austevoll after being officially handed over on 9 September 2025 by Karstensens Skibsværft in Denmark.
The vessel marks the third newbuild in the history of Knester AS, a family-owned company founded in 1967 by Knut Stenevik. Today, the fleet consists of Steinevik and the new Knester, operated by the Steinevik and Eliassen families, with the third generation now on board.

Built for modern fishing
The ship was designed for combined trawl and purse seine operations. Trawl fishing will primarily target blue whiting off the west coast of Ireland. At the same time, herring and mackerel will be the focus of purse seine seasons.
The hull was built at Karstensen Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, before being fitted out in Denmark. At 75.2 metres long and 15.6 metres wide, Knester is among the largest and most advanced in its class.
Focus on crew comfort and safety
Innovative design has played a central role. Special attention was given to noise reduction, with crew cabins positioned away from the propeller and other machinery. Most living quarters register below 55 decibels during operations – a significant improvement in comfort at sea.
The ship features a cinema, coffee bar, and private cabins with en-suite facilities. Safety systems include advanced fire suppression, lifeboats, and modern navigation and communication equipment.
A potent symbol for the community
For Austevoll, the return of Knester is not just about a new vessel. It is also a milestone for a local fishing tradition that has been passed down through generations. With its combination of cutting-edge technology, efficiency, and crew welfare, the vessel underlines the continuing importance of pelagic fisheries to Norway’s coastal economy.
