A new Faroese freezer trawler has reached the Faroe Islands as its build enters the final stage. The hull of Dunga Jákup arrived at Skála on 24 December, towed by the vessel Serval from Poland.

The shipyard MEST will now complete the ship, with delivery planned for summer 2026.

Hull arrives at MEST shipyard in Skála

The hull was built at the Stocznia Wisła shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. It left Gdansk on 12 December and was towed to the Faroes by Serval, a vessel operated by MEST.

The tow was delayed for a few days in Kristiansand, but otherwise went as planned. The arrival in Skálafjørður was marked by clear weather and strong local interest.

Final work to be done locally

With the hull now in Skála, MEST will complete the vessel’s full outfitting. This includes all remaining shipyard work needed before handover.

The trawler will be completed in the Faroe Islands, where MEST is based. Delivery to the owner is scheduled for summer 2026.

Owned by Varðin group

Dunga Jákup belongs to P/F Hvanngarður, part of the Varðin group. The vessel is named after Jákup Jacobsen, one of Varðin’s founders, who passed away in December last year.

Representatives from Varðin and MEST attended a small ceremony at the launch of the hull in Gdansk on 10 December.

Role in the Faroese fleet

Once delivered, the new freezer trawler is expected to fish for bottom species on the Faroese shelf.

It will replace the vessel Rankin, which Varðin sold in late 2023. Construction began earlier in 2025 and has remained on schedule so far.
