The Faroese pelagic vessel Christian í Grótinum has set a new record for the largest ever single landing of herring for human consumption.

On 28 January, the vessel landed 2,648,670 kg of herring at the Pelagos plant in Fuglafjørður in the Faroe Islands. The catch equals 2,648 tonnes.

The landing beat the previous record by just 3.8 tonnes.

Only days earlier, the vessel Gøtunes had appeared to set a new benchmark. On 23 January, Gøtunes landed 2,644,861 kg of herring to Varðin Pelagic in Tvøroyri. That catch was announced as the largest ever at the time.

Both vessels caught their fish in Norwegian waters. All figures are net weights.

Smaller mackerel landings included 100 tonnes from Hoyvík in Kollafjørður.
