The freezer trawler Blængur NK has returned to the water after more than six weeks in dry dock in Reykjavík. The vessel was launched 2. October and was expected to sail again the next day, with fishing likely to begin off the west coast of Iceland and around the Westfjords.

According to Síldarvinnslan’s operations manager Grétar Örn Sigfinnsson, the refit took longer than planned but left the ship “in its Sunday best.”

Major refit completed

The work included a complete repaint, an overhaul of the main engine, shaft work, and other key maintenance tasks. The ship was initially scheduled to spend four weeks in dock, but the project stretched into its sixth week before completion.

“The vessel looks great now. It has been fully prepared for fishing again,” Sigfinnsson said.

A long history at sea

Blængur was built in Spain in 1973 under the name Ingólfur Arnarson. It later carried the name Freri before being converted into a freezer trawler in 1985.

In 2000, it was lengthened and raised. Síldarvinnslan acquired the vessel in 2015 and has been operating it since then.
